My yoga journey began by putting in dvds and practicing in my living room several years ago. This was incredibly boring so naturally I assumed I was yoga-ing wrong. Like any good red-blooded American I continued to struggle harder and crank my back further in an effort to attain levels of enlightenment that only the great naked contortion looking yogis from India could achieve. It was not until I started attending classes at Hot Asana in Southern Pines did I start to understand what I had been missing; the breath. The flexibility, the weight loss, the shiny, healthy skin can all be great bonuses of a yoga practice, but the real secret is finding your breath, not standing on your head. This was great news as my favorite pose is Savasana, which unfortunately no one has ever been impressed with or complimented me on. You do not need to be anything other than what you are right now to start. This practice is about finding ease in the effort, which will extend into every part of your life. In other words, problems will always come, this practice will simply teach you how to hold onto your peace during the discomfort. And of course there are some days that all the yoga practices and kombucha in the world cannot fix---come in and breathe with us anyways.
